Directive explained

Pay setting and pay progression

Last reviewed 2026-10-16

Article 6: workers can see the criteria for pay, pay levels and pay progression. Member States may exempt employers with fewer than 50 workers from the progression part.

Article 6

What must be easy to find

Article 6 requires employers to make easily accessible to their workers the criteria used to determine pay, pay levels and pay progression. Those criteria are the same kind of objective, gender-neutral criteria Article 4 describes.

The small-employer option

Member States may exempt employers with fewer than 50 workers from the obligation related to pay progression. That exemption is optional for the Member State and, if used, is about progression criteria, not about Article 5 applicant information or Article 7’s right to information.
